Tehran
With a population of some 12 million people, Tehran is the modern capital of Iran established in the 18th century by the Qajar dynasty. The Alborz Mountains form the backdrop to this enormous sprawling city, best known for its horrendous traffic and pollution. It is nevertheless worth a visit as some excellent museums and palaces can be found here.
Amongst these are the Crown Jewels, one of the most spectacular collections of jewels in the world, held amongst tight security in the vaults of the Bank-e- Melli; the Archaeological Museum, the Carpet Museum and the Reza Abbassi Museum of miniatures and calligraphy. Palaces include the 19th century Golestan Palace, the Saad Abad Paalce complex in the northern part of the city, built by Reza Shah in the 20th century and the Niavaran Palace, the last Shah's residence – a sort of 1970’s time warp.
